After losing control of his previous star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Disney and his team developed a new character. Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks worked together on the early Mickey Mouse cartoons, with Iwerks playing a major role in designing and animating the character. Plane Crazy was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be completed and was test-screened in May 1928. The Gallopin' Gaucho followed, but neither initially found a distributor. Disney then turned to synchronized sound, leading to Steamboat Willie, which premiered in New York on November 18, 1928. Its combination of animation and synchronized sound helped make the cartoon a landmark in animation history. Although Steamboat Willie is often described as Mickey Mouse's debut, Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho came first in production. Steamboat Willie was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be released to the public. This collection also offers a connection to another important character featured on The Retro Cine TV. In 1930, Ub Iwerks left the Disney studio and established his own animation studio, where he created Flip the Frog.
